About
Influenced by Eastern wisdom and the works of Carl Jung on Archetypes and the Shadow, Golnaz Jebelli’s recent exhibitions have focused on people and the shadow. There is a strong psychological process behind her work. Her portraits, including of nomads and the inner child are psychological journeys, a visual storytelling.
“Beyond Reflections” embodies a selection of very personal paintings, exploring water often through her own shadow. Shadows, reflections, and water merge; like an alchemical process. Water, lakes, the sea all represent the subconscious mind in Jungian psychology. The process of painting this series of work too demanded of her to look at and paint elements from the subconsciousness represented on the surface of the canvases as marks and brushstrokes. Her painting process in obtaining flow is often assisted by music. A sense of freedom emerges from letting music lead her hand, allowing the brush to stroke the canvas in an “automatic” way. As her personal painting process evolved, the ‘automatic’ marks and brushstrokes took shape, hinting at something unseen, but equally as recognizable elements such as a face, limbs, animals, sea creatures, and at times may also reminisce of Persian writing and of calligraphy.
This is how Golnaz allows her psyche to reflect on the canvas. And as such, to create a language which may speak to us all through basic shapes from our collective unconsciousness. With a bold attempt to investigate what may exist in the depth of a lake, as well as the depths of the psyche. Only through intense and honest looking can we alchemically change our relationship to our shadow and also to our Inner Child; shifting the meaning of traumatic or unwanted memories that may form the shadow. However, it is also a search for light that is ultimately central to Golnaz’s art. Light creates a certain movement, sometimes scattered and travelling, swirling, and dancing.
“Painting for me often feels like a process of weaving together light and darkness (or shadow). Each brushstroke is like a bridge between the two polarising sides of life: a bridge between this world and the spiritual one. Art, for me, is a constant search for ultimate beauty, for the ‘unknown’ which some may name “God”.”
Golnaz jebelli has collaborated in the design of the football kit for COMO 1907 for several consecutive seasons since 2022. It was this successful collaboration that inspired her to create the more extensive production: “Beyond Reflections”, a series of paintings inspired by Lake Como, for the opening of Galleria Como in 2023.
Golnaz’s work is in a number of private collections across the UK, Europe, USA, Canada and Asia. Several of her paintings have been shortlisted by the College of Psychic Studies for various art Competitions. These include Shadow III for the “Inspiration from Dreams and Visions” competition in 2022. Mythical Passage was shortlisted for the “Inspiration from the Otherworldly” in 2023. Seeing the Extraordinary in the Mundane (an Inner Child portrait with spirit) was shortlisted in the 2024 competition “Inspiration from the Elements”. This works also won the Women in Art Fair inaugural Prize in 2025.
Golnaz was born in India to Persian parents. She has lived and worked in Sweden, Iran, France and Switzerland prior to settling London. She studied Fine Arts at Parsons School of Design in Paris and also holds First Class LL.B and LL.M. degrees.
Commissions
Golnaz works with private clients receiving commissions for children’s portraits and collaborates with businesses and fashion brands to create abstract artwork commissions. Her portraits are in a number of private collections across the UK, Europe, USA, Canada and Asia.
The process of commissioning a portrait starts with meeting and discussing the general mood and theme of what her client is looking for. As part of this initial briefing session, Golnaz is interested to learn about the specific colour theme and mood of the painting. It is typically not required to sit for the portraits. However, Golnaz does prefer to meet the people she paints in order to gain a better understanding of them. This is part of her character study in preparation of the portrait. The paintings can be based on a careful selection of photographs which capture a specific memory or time period special to her client. Her client may wish to share any detail about their memories, particularly in commissioning an Inner Child portrait.
Her oil painting process includes several layers of paint and a protective varnish. A final drying time is required before the painting is ready for varnishing and packaging. Commissions generally take between 2-4 months.
Golnaz is happy to make adjustments based on her client’s feedback during the commission process. Often, she is entrusted with the commission to only reveal the final piece upon completion. The whole process creates a deep bond between her and the person she paints. Golnaz loves to see the reaction of her clients when she first shows the final work.
Her approach in working with fashion brands is to learn and feel the unique qualities of the brand and to translate that into patterns and shapes which tell a story of the brand. She can work from specified mood and colour boards or from a broader sense of the brand as a whole. Golnaz also enjoyed personalising fashion accessories and clothing by hand painting directly on the pieces.
